Legality of Playing Rummy

The legality of playing Rummy in India is well-established through various Supreme Court rulings. In 1957, the Supreme Court clarified that prize competitions involving substantial skill are considered legitimate business activities and are protected under Article 19(1)(g) of the Indian Constitution.

Further solidifying this stance, the Supreme Court, in 1968, declared Rummy a game of skill. This landmark judgment has since been reaffirmed in multiple legal decisions. In 1996, the Court emphasized two key points:

• Any competition where success relies heavily on skill is not classified as 'gaming'.
• While there may be an element of chance, Rummy is predominantly a game of skill and therefore qualifies as a game of "mere skill".
